Can someone explain to me the grades in dominican republic ?

i can't seem to understand their grades. people ask me what grade i'm in and i be like "10th grade" and than they ask what year o.O or how many years. and in dominican republic they say school as in "colegio" does that mean that they're literally in college and their only 15 16 or 17 ?
